Can a special MRI scan predict who will have another stroke?

NCT ID NCT07497152

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a special type of MRI, called high-resolution vessel wall imaging, can help predict if a stroke will happen again in people with a narrowed brain artery. Researchers followed 74 patients who had a stroke or mini-stroke and received artery-opening treatment. The goal was to see if signs of inflammation or plaque in the artery wall could flag future stroke risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors better identify which patients with narrowed brain arteries are at highest risk of another stroke, leading to more personalized treatment decisions.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational study (74 participants) that only looks at imaging patterns, not a new treatment. The results may not apply to all stroke patients or change current care.
