Antarctic study tests breast milk sugar for immune boost

NCT ID NCT06133530

First seen Apr 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 18, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study looks at whether human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), a key ingredient in breast milk, can help adults living in Antarctica for a year maintain a healthy gut, immune system, and metabolism. Twenty-six healthy adults will take either an HMO supplement or a placebo. Researchers will track changes in gut bacteria, blood sugar, and inflammation to see if HMOs can counter the negative effects of extreme isolation and high altitude.
