New mRNA HIV vaccines enter early human testing

NCT ID NCT07569029

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This early-stage trial will test two experimental mRNA vaccines designed to teach the immune system to make antibodies that target HIV. About 42 adults with well-controlled HIV will receive the vaccines and then temporarily pause their regular HIV medication under close monitoring. The main goals are to check safety and see if the vaccines can trigger or boost specific immune responses against the virus.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

two experimental mRNA HIV vaccines (DV700P-RNA and DV701B1.1-RNA)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a vaccine that helps the immune system better control HIV, potentially reducing the need for daily antiretroviral therapy.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small Phase 1 trial focused on safety, not effectiveness. The vaccines may not produce strong or lasting immune responses, and the planned pause in HIV medication carries risks of viral rebound.
