New HIV vaccine candidate enters early safety testing

NCT ID NCT05423418

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested an experimental HIV vaccine in 65 healthy adults to see if it is safe and triggers an immune response. The vaccine includes two HIV proteins (A244 and B.63521) plus an adjuvant (ALFQ) to boost the immune system. Participants received three shots over two months, with different doses of the adjuvant to find the best balance of safety and immune reaction.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

HIV vaccine (A244 and B.63521 proteins) with ALFQ adjuvant

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help determine the best dose of ALFQ adjuvant for an HIV vaccine, moving us closer to an effective preventive shot.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 1 trial with only 65 healthy, low-risk participants. It focuses on safety and immune response, not on preventing HIV infection. The vaccine may not produce strong enough immunity or could have side effects.
