Dental visit could double as HIV test: study tests rapid screening in the Dentist's chair
NCT ID NCT07089849
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether offering rapid HIV testing during a dental visit leads more people to get tested than simply referring them to a lab. About 6,700 adult dental patients at four community health centers will be offered either a quick oral swab test on-site or a referral for lab-based testing. Researchers will track how many complete an HIV test within 84 days to see which approach works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Rapid HIV test or referral for lab HIV test
What this could lead to
If rapid testing works better, dental visits could become a routine way to catch HIV early and link people to care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in just 4 clinics, so results may not apply everywhere. Offering tests doesn't guarantee people will take them.
