Home HIV tests and PrEP during TB checks could boost prevention

NCT ID NCT07119359

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study in Uganda tests whether offering HIV self-testing and PrEP (a daily pill to prevent HIV) at home during routine TB contact tracing can increase HIV prevention. About 2,480 people from households with a TB patient will be randomly assigned to either home-based HIV testing and PrEP or standard clinic referral. The main goal is to see if more people start and continue PrEP when it's offered at home.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
HIV self-testing and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that combining HIV prevention with TB contact tracing is an effective way to reach more people at risk for HIV.
What could go wrong
This is an implementation study, not a test of a new drug. The results may not apply to other settings, and uptake or adherence to PrEP could be lower than expected.
