Scientists dive deep into HIV immune cells to unlock secrets of early treatment

NCT ID NCT00039689

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study collects white blood cells from HIV patients through a process called leukapheresis to examine how the immune system responds to early treatment. Researchers aim to enroll 60 adults—30 with early HIV and 30 with chronic HIV—who are not yet on antiretroviral therapy. Participants will provide blood samples before starting treatment and three times a year afterward, helping scientists understand immune function and viral suppression.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could reveal how early HIV treatment preserves immune function, pointing toward better treatment strategies.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead to direct patient benefits, and results may not apply to all HIV patients.
