Sound waves vs. pancreatic cancer: a new way to attack deadly tumours
NCT ID NCT07873606
First seen Oct 14, 2026 · Last updated Oct 15, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are testing a non-invasive ultrasound technique called histotripsy in people with pancreatic cancer that cannot be removed by surgery. Histotripsy uses focused sound waves to create tiny bubbles inside the tumour that burst and break apart the cancer tissue without heat or radiation. The study will track safety, changes in tumour size, and pain levels in 20 participants. Scientists also want to see whether the treatment triggers an immune response that could make other cancer therapies work better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- histotripsy, a non-invasive ultrasound procedure that uses sound waves to break down tumour tissue
- What this could lead to
- If it works, histotripsy could offer a way to destroy pancreatic tumours without surgery or heat, and might help the immune system fight the cancer alongside chemotherapy.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early study of 20 people with a hard-to-treat cancer. The procedure may not control tumours well enough, and it carries risks from general anaesthesia and possible damage to nearby organs.

Inclusion Criteria: * Age ≥ 18 years old * Fit for general anaesthesia * Unresectable pancreatic cancer with, or without vascular encasement * With or without distant metastasis * Without portal vein thrombosis * Good performance status: 1. Tumour visible and targetable by ultrasound with acceptable acoustic windows 2. Adequate hematologic, hepatic, and renal function Exclusion Criteria: * Refusal to take part in clinical trial * Portal vein thrombosis present * Not fit for general anaesthesia * Poor general condition with limited life expectancy * Uncontrolled coagulopathy * Extensive bowel interposition preventing safe targeting, per recent porcine safety data linking mis-targeting to bowel injury
