Heated vs. sprayed chemo: which works better for belly cancer?
NCT ID NCT07282834
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two methods of giving chemotherapy directly into the abdomen for people whose cancer has spread there (peritoneal carcinomatosis). One method, HIPEC, uses heated chemotherapy circulated during surgery. The other, PIPAC, delivers chemotherapy as a pressurized spray during a minimally invasive procedure. The trial will enroll 200 adults to see which approach is safer, better tolerated, and more effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mitomycin C (chemotherapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this trial could identify which direct-to-abdomen chemotherapy method is safer and more tolerable for patients with cancer spread in the belly.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with 200 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Both methods involve chemotherapy side effects and surgical risks.
