New study aims to find best pain block for hip surgery patients

NCT ID NCT07180979

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study compares two types of nerve blocks (PENG block vs. a combination of lumbar and sacral ESPB) to see which provides better pain control after total hip replacement. Ninety adults aged 65 and older will be randomly assigned to receive one of the blocks during surgery. Researchers will measure opioid use, pain scores, and how quickly patients can walk in the first 48 hours after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Ropivacaine
What this could lead to
If one nerve block proves better, it could mean less pain, less opioid use, and faster walking after hip replacement surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (90 people) comparing two established techniques. The difference may be small or not apply to all patients.
