Hip fracture patients at heart risk may benefit from dual blood thinners
NCT ID NCT07228663
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a combination of two blood thinners (rivaroxaban and aspirin) can prevent heart attacks and blood clots in patients who had a hip fracture surgery and also suffered a heart injury. About 100 adults aged 45 and older will be randomly assigned to either the combo for 90 days or standard clot-prevention treatment for 30 days. The main goal is to see if a larger trial is possible.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
rivaroxaban and aspirin
What this could lead to
If this pilot succeeds, it could lead to a larger trial testing whether a combination of blood thinners can prevent heart attacks and blood clots after hip fracture surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (100 people) testing feasibility, not effectiveness. The combination therapy also carries a risk of bleeding.
