Mayo clinic tests if adding a scope improves hip surgery outcomes
NCT ID NCT03181048
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two surgical approaches for hip dysplasia: the standard periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) alone versus PAO combined with hip arthroscopy. Researchers will enroll 106 people aged 15-55 with mild or no arthritis. The goal is to see if adding arthroscopy leads to better function and less pain over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Periacetabular osteotomy with or without hip arthroscopy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding hip arthroscopy during PAO improves hip function and reduces pain for people with hip dysplasia.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial comparing two surgical procedures. The added arthroscopy may not provide significant benefit and could increase surgical risks.
