Exercise may spark lung repair in COPD patients
NCT ID NCT07343375
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can help regenerate lung tissue in people with COPD who are waiting for lung volume reduction surgery. 24 participants will be randomly assigned to either a HIIT exercise program or no exercise. Researchers will compare lung tissue samples and other health measures before and after the training to see if exercise can trigger lung repair.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
High-intensity interval training (HIIT)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that exercise can actually help repair lung tissue in COPD, changing how we think about lung health.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study with only 24 people, so results may not apply to everyone. It's also looking at biological changes, not yet at curing or reversing COPD.
