Depth camera could guide oxygen therapy and prevent intubation in respiratory failure

NCT ID NCT06819644

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether adjusting the flow rate of high-flow oxygen therapy based on lung volume measurements from a depth camera can reduce the need for intubation in intensive care patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure. About 406 participants will be randomly assigned to either standard high-flow oxygen or a strategy where the flow rate is tailored using the camera's lung volume readings. The main goal is to see if this personalized approach lowers the rate of intubation within 28 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

high-flow oxygen therapy with flow rate adjustment guided by depth camera lung volume measurements

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could reduce the need for intubation and mechanical ventilation in intensive care patients with breathing failure.

What could go wrong

This is a single trial testing a new technique; results may not apply to all patients, and the depth camera method may not improve outcomes over standard care.
