New oxygen method may stop pneumonia after surgery

NCT ID NCT07528404

First seen May 09, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether using a high-flow nasal cannula (a device that delivers warm, moist oxygen at high speeds) for 24 hours right after major abdominal surgery can prevent early lung complications like pneumonia or collapsed lungs. About 580 adults having long abdominal surgeries will be randomly assigned to receive either this oxygen therapy or standard care. The goal is to see if this simple breathing support can reduce serious breathing problems within the first week after surgery.
