New drug shrinks lung tumors before surgery in early trial
NCT ID NCT07428044
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether the drug trastuzumab deruxtecan can shrink tumors in people with a specific type of lung cancer (HER2-amplified or HER2-mutated) before they have surgery. About 14 participants with stage II to IIIB non-small cell lung cancer will receive the drug and then have their tumors removed. The main goal is to see how many people have a major reduction in viable tumor cells after treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- trastuzumab deruxtecan (a drug that targets HER2 and delivers chemotherapy directly to cancer cells)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that giving trastuzumab deruxtecan before surgery shrinks tumors more effectively, potentially leading to a new treatment option for this type of lung cancer.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 14 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug can cause side effects like lung inflammation, and it's not yet proven to improve long-term outcomes.
