New hepatitis b drug shows promise in large trial

NCT ID NCT07203118

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new medication called hepenofovir fumarate (HTS) for people with chronic hepatitis B, a long-term liver infection. About 1,444 adults aged 18-65 who have not been treated before (or stopped treatment at least 6 months ago) will take one of three doses of HTS or the standard drug TAF daily. The goal is to see which dose works best and is safest, with the hope of offering a new treatment option.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

hepenofovir fumarate (HTS)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a new once-daily pill option to control chronic hepatitis B, potentially with better safety or efficacy than current treatments.

What could go wrong

This is an early-to-mid stage trial, so the drug may not prove more effective or safer than existing therapy. Side effects are still being evaluated.
