Extra cut during hemorrhoid surgery may ease pain but risks leakage

NCT ID NCT06884774

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This completed study looked at 200 adults having hemorrhoid surgery. Half also had a small cut in a muscle around the anus (lateral internal sphincterotomy). Researchers measured pain and accidental leakage of gas or stool after surgery. The goal was to see if the extra cut helps with pain without causing too much incontinence.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgical procedure (hemorrhoidectomy with or without lateral internal sphincterotomy)

What this could lead to

If adding sphincterotomy reduces pain after hemorrhoid removal, it could become a standard part of the surgery.

What could go wrong

The study is small and completed, so results may not apply to all patients. Adding sphincterotomy may increase incontinence risk.
