Heartbeat clues may predict Post-Surgery nausea in women

NCT ID NCT06948708

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether heart rate variability (HRV) — a measure of how your heart rate changes — can predict nausea and vomiting after gallbladder surgery. Researchers monitored 110 women before and after surgery using a chest strap. The goal is to see if HRV can help doctors identify who is more likely to feel sick after anesthesia, so they can offer better prevention.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple, non-invasive way to predict which patients are at higher risk for post-surgery nausea and vomiting, allowing for better preventive care.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational study (110 participants) that only looks for a link, not a treatment. Results may not apply to men or other surgeries, and the predictive value of HRV may be too weak to be clinically useful.
