Heart surgery fluid showdown: which priming solution works best?
NCT ID NCT07267546
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how different fluids used to fill the heart-lung machine before heart surgery affect the body's balance. 80 adults having bypass or valve surgery will be split into four groups, each receiving a different priming solution. Researchers will track changes in acid-base balance, electrolytes, and kidney function to find the safest option.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ringer's Acetate and Plasmalyte (priming solutions)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose the best priming fluid to reduce side effects during heart surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. It is not testing a new treatment, only comparing existing fluids.
