Heart injury after surgery: can a simple referral save lives?
NCT ID NCT06768034
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
About 1 in 10 people who have noncardiac surgery experience a heart injury, which raises their risk of death within 30 days. This pilot study will test whether routinely referring these patients to a heart specialist (internist or cardiologist) helps them get the right medications and care. The study will enroll 100 adults and focus on whether this approach is practical, not yet on whether it prevents heart attacks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
referral to a heart specialist (internist or cardiologist)
What this could lead to
If this pilot shows it's feasible, it could lead to a larger study that may improve heart care after surgery and reduce heart attacks.
What could go wrong
This is a very early pilot study with only 100 people, testing whether the approach is practical—not whether it works. It may not lead to clear benefits.
