Pneumonia survivors face hidden heart risks – new study aims to find out why
NCT ID NCT06601998
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study follows 650 adults who had pneumonia (including COVID-19) to see how the infection might lead to heart disease later. Researchers will collect blood samples, run heart and lung tests, and track heart attacks, strokes, and other events over three years. No new treatment is being tested; the goal is to better understand the link between lung infections and cardiovascular problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors identify which pneumonia survivors are at higher risk for heart attacks or strokes, and point toward ways to prevent those events.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not test any new drug or therapy, so it cannot directly improve health. Results may take years to influence medical practice.
