New hope: hepatitis c drugs after liver cancer treatment

NCT ID NCT02771405

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether interferon-free drug combinations can cure hepatitis C in 150 people who had been successfully treated for liver cancer. Participants took pills like sofosbuvir and ribavirin for 12 weeks. The main goal was to see if the virus stayed undetectable 12 weeks after treatment, and to check for any cancer return.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sofosbuvir, Ribavirin, Simeprevir, Daclatasvir, Ledipasvir

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that treating hepatitis C after liver cancer treatment reduces cancer recurrence and improves long-term outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results may not apply to all patients. There is a risk of virologic failure or cancer recurrence despite treatment.
