Can goat liver beat iron pills for anemia? new trial in nepal
NCT ID NCT07661602
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether eating goat liver three times a week can improve anemia in teenage girls in Nepal, compared to standard iron-folic acid pills. Researchers will also look at how gut bacteria affect iron absorption. Sixty girls aged 15-19 with anemia will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments for 12 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- goat liver (dietary supplement) and iron folic acid supplement
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a cheap, locally available food-based alternative to iron pills for treating anemia in adolescents.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply widely. The goat liver diet may be hard to follow long-term.
