Gut bacteria may control immune cell fuel – new study investigates
NCT ID NCT07300553
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at how gut bacteria change the energy use of immune cells in people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and healthy adults. Researchers will give healthy volunteers a short course of antibiotics to alter their gut bacteria, then measure immune cell metabolism using a special blood test. IBD patients will be tested once without antibiotics. Participants will also consume a labeled fiber to track how gut bacteria break it down. The goal is to understand the link between gut microbes and immune cell function, which could lead to better treatments for IBD.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Vancomycin, Amphotericin B, Gentamicin (antibiotics and antifungal)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reveal how gut bacteria influence immune cell energy, pointing toward new ways to manage inflammatory bowel disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 45 participants. It aims to understand mechanisms, not test a treatment, so direct patient benefits are uncertain.
