Gut check: could potato starch tune your heart and lungs?
NCT ID NCT06851039
First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This study looked at whether eating resistant starch (a type of fiber) or sodium butyrate (a gut bacteria byproduct) can change how the body controls heart rate and breathing. Fourteen healthy adults took each supplement for four weeks in a random order. Researchers measured gut bacteria products in blood and stool, and tested heart and lung reflexes. The goal was to understand the link between diet, gut bacteria, and automatic body functions, not to treat any disease.
