New gum graft material could reduce pain for receding gums
NCT ID NCT03162016
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new material called Mucoderm, made from donated animal tissue, to treat receding gums. It compared it to the standard treatment, which uses a small piece of tissue from the patient's own palate. The goal was to see if Mucoderm could cover exposed tooth roots just as well but with less pain. Twelve patients with gum recession on both sides of their mouth received one treatment on each side, and the results were compared after 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mucoderm (xenogenic acellular dermal matrix)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less painful alternative to traditional gum grafting for treating receding gums.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study with only 12 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The new material may not cover roots as well as the standard graft.
