Micro-needling vs. gum graft: a tiny trial tests a simpler fix for receding gums
NCT ID NCT05470660
First seen Jul 24, 2026 ยท Last updated Jul 24, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests whether micro-needling, combined with a gum-lifting procedure, can thicken receding gums as well as a standard gum graft substitute (Alloderm). Twenty-four adults with at least 3 mm of gum recession on a front tooth will receive one of the two treatments. The main goal is to see how much gum thickness increases after six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a gum-lifting procedure (coronally advanced flap) combined with either micro-needling or a donated skin graft substitute (Alloderm)
- What this could lead to
- If micro-needling works as well as a graft substitute, it could offer a simpler, less invasive option for treating receding gums.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot study with only 24 people, so results may not apply widely. Micro-needling is a new approach for gum recession and may not thicken gums as effectively as the graft.
