First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether applying a nitroglycerin gel (glyceryl trinitrate) to the heel using ultrasound (phonophoresis) can reduce pain and thickening of the plantar fascia. Eighty adults with chronic plantar fasciitis will receive either the gel plus exercises or exercises alone. The goal is to see if the gel helps more than standard care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
glyceryl trinitrate gel
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new non-surgical option to ease pain and improve function for people with stubborn plantar fasciitis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The gel can cause headaches or skin irritation, and the benefit over standard care is unproven.
