Sugar tracer reveals how immune cells fuel up in the ICU
NCT ID NCT07811180
First seen Sep 09, 2026 · Last updated Sep 10, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center want to understand how immune cells use glucose, the body's main sugar, during critical illness. They give 25 adult ICU patients an intravenous infusion of a non-radioactive carbon-13 glucose tracer over a few hours. Then they collect immune cells from blood samples and measure how much tracer the cells took up and what they did with it. The goal is to map immune cell metabolism in conditions like sepsis, which could inform future treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- carbon-13 labeled glucose tracer
- What this could lead to
- If researchers map how immune cells burn glucose during critical illness, that could point to new ways to support the immune system in ICU patients with sepsis or other severe conditions.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational tracer study with 25 ICU patients, so it can only describe glucose use, not prove that changing it helps anyone. The findings may not apply to other patient groups or illnesses.

Inclusion Criteria: * Adults aged 18 or older * Admitted to one of the following VUMC adult ICUs: Medical ICU, Pulmonary ICU * The participant or legally authorized representative must agree to the genetic analyses required as part of this study Exclusion Criteria: * Pregnant * Prisoner or in police custody * Patient desires comfort measures only or has a goals-of-care plan inconsistent with participation in non-beneficial research procedures * Hemoglobin less than 8 g/dL * Uncontrolled hyperglycemia (persistent blood glucose \>300 mg/dL) or any clinical condition in which additional IV glucose administration is not appropriate in the opinion of the Study Coordinator, PI, or treating ICU team * Current participation in another study where the total volume of blood drawn, when added to this study blood draw volume, exceeds 500 mL in an 8-week period * Unable to safely obtain vascular access required for study infusion and blood collection * Clinical instability or anticipated clinical care needs that would make the study procedure inappropriate at that time in the opinion of the Study Coordinator, PI, or treating ICU team * Any medical issue or pharmacologic exposure which, in the opinion of the study investigator, might interfere with the study objectives * Any reason which, in the opinion of the study investigator, adds additional risk to the patient
