Could a week off GLP-1 drugs make endoscopies safer and more effective?
NCT ID NCT07736911
First seen Jul 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial asks whether pausing GLP-1 receptor agonists (like semaglutide or tirzepatide) for one week before an upper endoscopy leads to a cleaner stomach and fewer repeat procedures. About 140 adults who take these drugs and are scheduled for an endoscopy will be randomly assigned to either stop their medication for a week or continue as usual. The goal is to see if a simple drug holiday can improve the quality of the exam and reduce the need for a second scope.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- stopping GLP-1 receptor agonists (like semaglutide or tirzepatide) for one week before an upper endoscopy
- What this could lead to
- If a one-week pause improves stomach visibility, it could lead to a simple, safer pre-endoscopy guideline for people on these popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, so results may not apply broadly. Stopping GLP-1 drugs could cause blood sugar spikes or other side effects in some patients.
