Glaucoma surgery showdown: new procedure may offer safer option
NCT ID NCT06952153
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two surgical procedures for people with primary angle-closure glaucoma: Phaco-GSL (cataract surgery combined with a procedure to open the eye's drainage angle) and trabeculectomy (a standard glaucoma surgery that creates a new drainage pathway). Researchers want to see which one controls eye pressure better and has fewer side effects. About 82 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two surgeries and followed for a year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Phacoemulsification with Goniosynechialysis (Phaco-GSL) and Trabeculectomy with 5FU
- What this could lead to
- If this trial succeeds, it could show that Phaco-GSL is a safer or equally effective alternative to trabeculectomy for controlling eye pressure in glaucoma patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 82 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Both surgeries carry risks like infection, bleeding, or vision changes.
