Can a video replace genetic counseling for breast cancer risk?
NCT ID NCT05325151
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 07, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tests whether a genetic counseling video delivered through a patient portal works as well as traditional in-person genetic counseling for women at elevated breast cancer risk. About 874 women aged 30-64 will be randomly assigned to either the video or standard counseling. The goal is to see if the video approach is non-inferior in helping women follow screening guidelines, understand their risk, and feel satisfied with the counseling.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- genetic counseling patient preference (GCPP) intervention via MyChart patient portal
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a more accessible, patient-centered alternative to conventional genetic counseling for women at elevated breast cancer risk, potentially reducing healthcare burden.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study comparing two counseling approaches, not testing a new treatment. The intervention may not be as effective as in-person counseling for all women, and results may not apply to other populations.
