Gene therapy aims to stop deadly skin cancers in rare disease patients

NCT ID NCT06731933

First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether a gene therapy called BVEC can help prevent squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) from returning after it is removed in people with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), a rare genetic condition that causes fragile, blistering skin. Researchers will apply the gene therapy to the skin after cancer surgery and track how often the cancer comes back. The trial involves 16 adults with RDEB and a confirmed skin cancer diagnosis.
