Could a simple gel shield the rectum during cervical cancer radiation?
NCT ID NCT07292818
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early study tests whether a gel spacer, already used in prostate cancer, can be safely placed between the cervix and rectum in 14 women with cervical cancer receiving standard chemoradiation. The goal is to see if the gel creates enough space to reduce radiation exposure to the rectum, potentially lowering side effects. Researchers will also measure how long the procedure takes and how easy it is to perform.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Barrigel (hyaluronic acid-based gel spacer)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a way to reduce radiation damage to the rectum during cervical cancer treatment, potentially lowering side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early feasibility study with only 14 people. It is not designed to prove the gel works, only that it can be placed safely. The gel may not reduce side effects as hoped.
