Can a video game help treat OCD? small study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT05850312
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early study tests whether a custom video game called Militant of the Maze can make exposure therapy for OCD more effective and engaging. Researchers will first have clinicians play and evaluate the game, then refine it and test it with a few non-clinician volunteers. The goal is to see if the game is enjoyable, safe, and able to simulate exposure to triggers like simulated sneezes, while measuring heart rate and player experience.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
gamified digital intervention (video game)
What this could lead to
If this works, it could point toward a more engaging way to deliver exposure therapy for OCD, potentially improving treatment adherence.
What could go wrong
This is a very early feasibility study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The game is still being developed and tested for safety and enjoyment, not yet proven to reduce OCD symptoms.
