New dissolvable stent could revolutionize heart disease treatment
NCT ID NCT02890160
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested a new device called Firesorb, a temporary scaffold that slowly releases medicine to keep heart arteries open and then dissolves over time. Researchers compared it to a standard permanent stent in 430 people with coronary artery disease. The goal was to see if the scaffold works as well or better at maintaining artery openness after one year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Firesorb (sirolimus-eluting bioresorbable scaffold)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a safer, temporary scaffold for blocked arteries that dissolves over time, potentially reducing long-term complications.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with 430 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The scaffold might not perform as well as permanent stents, and risks like blood clots or artery re-narrowing remain.
