Could a frailty score predict which older cancer patients survive intensive care?
NCT ID NCT07825090
First seen Sep 17, 2026 · Last updated Sep 18, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Older adults with cancer who need intensive care often face a higher risk of dying, and delays in moving them from the emergency department to the ICU may add to that risk. This study reviews the medical records of 150 patients aged 65 and older with solid or blood cancers who were admitted from the emergency department to an anesthesiology and reanimation intensive care unit. Researchers examine whether the time spent waiting for an ICU bed, the patient's age group, and a frailty score are linked to death within 30 days. They also look at how these factors relate to how long patients stay in the ICU and hospital, and whether they die during the hospital stay.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the study finds a link, hospitals could use frailty scores and wait times to flag older cancer patients at higher risk and prioritize their intensive care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center review of past records, so it can show patterns but not prove cause and effect. Its findings may not apply to other hospitals or patient groups.
