New foot block may get you walking faster after surgery

NCT ID NCT03504462

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a new way to numb only the front part of the foot for surgery, leaving the heel sensation intact. The goal was to see if this approach could provide good pain relief while allowing patients to walk earlier. Twenty-seven adults having foot surgery received a targeted injection of a long-lasting anesthetic near specific nerves in the foot.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ropivacaine (local anesthetic)

What this could lead to

If successful, this technique could offer better pain control after foot surgery while allowing patients to walk sooner.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 27 participants, so results may not apply broadly. There is a risk of nerve damage or incomplete anesthesia.
