New tool aims to help seniors get the surgery they really want
NCT ID NCT07664514
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a communication tool called the FOCUS Guide. It is designed to help older adults (age 65 and up) and their surgeons talk about the goal of surgery during clinic visits. The study will see if using the guide leads to more discussions and documentation of surgery goals, and if care matches what patients want. About 180 people will take part at the University of Utah.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
FOCUS Guide (a communication tool)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help older adults have clearer conversations with their surgeon about what they want from surgery, leading to care that better matches their goals.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 180 people at one hospital. The guide may not change how doctors and patients talk, or it may not work for everyone.
