First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether transplanting healthy gut bacteria (fecal microbiota transplant, or FMT) combined with prebiotics can relieve chronic constipation. Nineteen adults with hard-to-treat constipation will receive the treatment via colonoscopy. The goal is to improve bowel movements and gut health, with researchers monitoring safety and changes in the microbiome.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) combined with prebiotics
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a new, safer treatment option for people with chronic constipation that doesn't respond to standard therapies.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage trial with only 19 participants and no comparison group, so results may not apply widely. Side effects like bloating, diarrhea, or rare infections are possible.
