Heart failure study: can patients drink freely without harm?
NCT ID NCT07400991
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether people hospitalized for acute heart failure can safely drink as much as they want instead of limiting fluids. About 420 participants will be randomly assigned to either a strict 1.5 liters per day limit or a thirst-driven liberal intake. Researchers will measure how quickly patients stabilize, their thirst distress, and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- fluid intake strategy (behavioral intervention)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that letting heart failure patients drink as they wish is safe and may improve their comfort and quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a moderate-sized trial testing a behavioral change, not a new drug. Results may not apply to all heart failure patients, and the liberal approach could worsen fluid overload in some cases.
