Heart patients may get kidney shield from diabetes pills
NCT ID NCT07231939
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether SGLT2 inhibitors (drugs like empagliflozin and dapagliflozin, typically used for diabetes) can prevent acute kidney injury caused by contrast dye used in heart X-rays and stent procedures. Researchers will review records of 4,000 patients who had these heart procedures between 2020 and 2025, comparing those who were taking an SGLT2 inhibitor with those who were not. The goal is to see if the drug reduces the chance of kidney damage within 72 hours after the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SGLT2 inhibitors (empagliflozin or dapagliflozin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that taking an SGLT2 inhibitor before heart procedures reduces the risk of kidney damage from contrast dye.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a controlled trial, so results may be less reliable. The benefit may be small or not apply to all patients.
