Can a Four-Session group program spark motivation to overcome addiction?
NCT ID NCT07658963
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a new four-session group program, called the First Step Program, can be delivered in hospital settings and help people with substance use disorders. The program combines motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, and group support to boost motivation to change and reduce cravings. About 20 adults in inpatient care in Korea will participate, completing questionnaires and interviews before, during, and up to three months after the program. Because this is a small pilot study without a comparison group, its main goal is to see if the program is feasible and worth testing in a larger trial.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
First Step Program (behavioral intervention combining motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, and group therapy)
What this could lead to
If this program proves feasible and shows early benefits, it could lead to a larger trial testing whether a brief psychosocial intervention helps people with substance use disorders build motivation and reduce cravings.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 20 participants and no comparison group, so any positive findings may not hold up in larger, more rigorous trials. The program is also short (four sessions) and may not produce lasting change.
