Allergy pill tested to protect heart attack survivors

NCT ID NCT07381803

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether fexofenadine, a common allergy medication, can reduce the risk of serious heart and brain events in people who have recently had a heart attack. About 2,800 participants will receive either fexofenadine or a placebo for 24 months. The goal is to see if the drug lowers the chance of death, another heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

fexofenadine hydrochloride (allergy medication)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to reduce the risk of further heart problems after a heart attack.

What could go wrong

This is a large phase 3 trial, but fexofenadine is not typically used for heart conditions, so it may not provide any benefit. The study is still recruiting, so results are years away.
