New PET scan aims to spot tiny brain tumors that standard MRI misses

NCT ID NCT07456878

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early study tests a special PET/MRI scan using a radioactive tracer called FET to find small pituitary tumors that don't show up on regular MRI. The goal is to improve detection of these hormone-producing tumors in 5 adults with confirmed biochemical disease. If the scan works, it could help guide surgery and improve treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Fluoroethyl-L-tyrosine (FET)

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging method could help doctors find hidden pituitary tumors more accurately, leading to better surgical decisions and outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-phase study with only 5 participants, so results may not apply widely. The scan is still experimental and its benefits over standard methods are unproven.
