New PET tracer could make pituitary tumor imaging more accessible

NCT ID NCT06584123

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study at the University of Cambridge is testing whether a new PET scan tracer called FET can locate pituitary tumors as well as the standard tracer, methionine. The study involves 20 adults with suspected pituitary adenomas who have already had a methionine PET scan. If FET works similarly, it could be easier to produce and distribute, potentially expanding access to this type of imaging.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

18F-fluoro-ethyl-tyrosine (FET) PET tracer

What this could lead to

If FET works as well as the current tracer, it could make advanced pituitary tumor imaging more widely available, since FET is easier to produce and distribute.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It is also testing a diagnostic tool, not a treatment, so it won't directly improve health.
