Electric bike training may soothe Post-Stroke arm pain
NCT ID NCT07570199
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding functional electrical stimulation (FES)-assisted cycling to standard rehab helps stroke survivors with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Forty participants either received FES cycling plus conventional therapy or conventional therapy alone for 20 sessions. Researchers measured pain, hand swelling, function, and quality of life at the start, after 4 weeks, and at 12 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Functional electrical stimulation (FES)-assisted bicycle ergometer
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce pain and swelling and improve arm function in stroke survivors with CRPS.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 40 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and the added benefit of FES over standard rehab is still uncertain.
