Fertility hope: egg freezing before breast cancer chemo tested in new study
NCT ID NCT02871167
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether ovarian stimulation and egg or embryo freezing is safe and doable for young women (ages 18–38) with early breast cancer who are about to start chemotherapy. The goal is to help preserve their fertility. Researchers will track how many eggs are collected, the quality of those eggs and embryos, and any side effects from the hormone treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) with recombinant FSH and GnRH agonist trigger, followed by oocyte/embryo cryopreservation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a reliable way for young breast cancer patients to preserve their fertility before starting chemotherapy.
What could go wrong
This is a feasibility study, not a large trial, so results may not apply to all patients. Ovarian stimulation carries a small risk of overstimulation, and not all preserved eggs or embryos will lead to a successful pregnancy later.
