Frozen hope: new study offers fertility option for rare condition

NCT ID NCT06518746

First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study is for people under 30 with disorders of sex development who are at risk of infertility or ovarian cancer. When they have surgery to remove their ovaries for medical reasons, a portion of the tissue will be frozen and stored. The goal is to see if this tissue can later be used to restore fertility or hormone function. The study will track how many samples survive freezing and whether patients find this approach acceptable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
cryopreservation of gonadal tissue
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a way to preserve fertility and restore hormone function for patients with gonadal dysgenesis who otherwise have no options.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 50 participants, and it is not yet known if the frozen tissue will actually restore fertility or hormone function. There is also a risk of adverse events from the procedure.
